From the beginning, Syberberg looked to music for something that might prevent art from morphing into its quotidian and familiar guise, although at the same time he was not unaware that music itself could show such a face, too, as evidenced by his long- standing reckoning with Richard Wagner. In The Nossendorf Project, music is still what Syberberg draws upon. In Café Zilm, the music from the artist’s childhood reappears – Bach, Mozart, and children’s songs, while the work itself follows a musical structure comprising intertwining, contrapuntal lines. Another Syberberg’s action from the same period was the purchase of an organ for the church in Nossendorf,289 which had to be renovated following many years of neglect. In an untitled action held on 5 May 2018 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Demmin, which was released as a video recording under the title of Demmin Requiem, Syberberg’s work appears to become indistinguishable from commemorating his fellow citizens killed that night in 1945. Or from a concert, which on that occasion, along with Mozart’s motet Ave verum corpus, featured a church choir from Demmin and the Prussian Chamber Orchestra performing Requiem by the same composer.290 It is as if his art had finally come so close to a piece it had previously circled around that every difference between them disappeared...
When toward the end of her essay Susan Sontag repeatedly mentions Joyce’s name alongside Syberberg’s, the thought arises that something is also apparent in her discourse that was not accessible to her herself. 291 She could not know at the time that the ending of Ulysses would find itself in a film by Syberberg, she could not know that the The Night would be dubbed an “Odyssey [...] into the lost kingdom of memories”, just as she could not know that verses from the Odyssey, the one by Homer, would find their way into Penthesilea. But she could sense that the artist’s path and his art alike outlined the biography of the one who left Ithaca dreaming of a return. And when he finally returned, he could see that his dream was quite different from the reality he found there.292 And Syberberg’s art? In an effort to prevent an ending that would, by nullifying everything that came before it, turn the work into something familiar, everyday-looking, his art found ways to neutralize, double, or postpone it. Although none of his works could set off into such an adventure if they had not always already been completed, if the mere ending had not granted their survival, in the case of his cinematic works, it is as if their given setting could still conceal the diaphora in the ending itself. As if his works entirely had to surrender to something else, faced with the question of whether they still existed or had disappeared already, in order to reveal what has always remained overshadowed, forgotten, and suppressed. Was this what the artist was looking for on his journey around the world? Something that was always there – and will never be.
