In a meeting between Pabst and Goebbels, Kehlmann imagines Pabst thinking with contempt: "What did this man mean, what did he want? This man, to whom once, in a life that was irrevocably over, he would never have spoken a word and whom he would have had chased off his set if he had dared to show up there."

And yet, he smiles. He plays along.

The novel doesn't offer easy judgments, only the unsettling question of what remains when integrity is gone and art endures. How passion turns into complicity.

Haunting and darkly funny, "The Director" is part political allegory, part fever dream, with more than a hint of moral reckoning for today's reactionary assaults on culture.
